Global roundabout 1974-2014

In 1974, Time Magazine blamed the cold polar vortex on global cooling.

‘Scientists have found other indications of global cooling. For one thing there has been a noticeable expansion of the great belt of dry, high-altitude polar winds —the so-called circumpolar vortex—that sweep from west to east around the top and bottom of the world.’

Forty years later, Time Magazine blames the cold polar vortex on global warming

‘But not only does the cold spell not disprove climate change, it may well be that global warming could be making the occasional bout of extreme cold weather in the U.S. even more likely. Right now much of the U.S. is in the grip of a polar vortex, which is pretty much what it sounds like: a whirlwind of extremely cold, extremely dense air that forms near the poles.’

You can also go to  www.openmarket.org for a romp through the New York Times tergiversations on global warming/global cooling. It is highly instructive to read them in sequence. Crying ‘wolf’ is the business of newspapers. The wolf may change its shape and nature but the crying never stops.

The amazing aspect of these articles is that most were written by the NY Times’ science editor, who seems to have given no indication he understood the many internal contradictions in his reporting.
